TOTA is Active in Social Media

Marketing_soc_media_pg_FACEBOOK.jpgThompson Okanagan Tourism is actively engaged in using social media channels to promote awareness and travel to destinations throughout our region.  TOTA has accounts on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube -- regularly posting updated news, videos and other information to update travel trade, travel media, consumers and the public about the latest features of destinations in the Thompson Okanagan.

Join TOTA'S Favorite Places Page on Facebook for Free

The following is a great free opportunity to have your business become part of TOTA’s Facebook Favorite Places page!

Check-Ins are a popular feature enabling social media users visiting your business to "check-in" and share their arrival at your business with their friends and networks in real time. Over 10 million people check-in using the social media platform Foursquare and 100 million do it using Facebook. Businesses can greatly benefit from the free promotion the check-in feature provides as customers who do check-in often share details of their experience.

Marketing_soc_media_pg_TWITTER.jpgFor example, if John checks-in to Mom's Pizzaria, his check-in is shared with his friends, such as "Join me for a pizza at Moms". John can write tips or messages, such as "Tuesday is $5 pepperoni night!"

Favorite Places is an application on TOTA's Facebook Page that features the customer check-ins of TOTA's members. The most popular places, judged by how many "check-ins" are accumulated, are displayed to people visiting the TOTA fan page to research what the popular attractions, restaurants, hotels, and activities of the Thompson Okanagan region are.

TOTA stakeholders who wish to be featured on the Favorite Places application will need to add and claim their business "Place" on both Foursquare and Facebook, as well as encourage customers to check-in. Adding and claiming your place is a free and easy process requiring only a computer and a smartphone. If interested, we can provide documentation on how to complete this. Customers are then able to do check-ins by way of their mobile phones when arriving at your business.

Marketing_soc_media_pg_YOUTUBE.jpgMany businesses offer promotions and discounts (eg. $5 off you meal) for checking-in to Foursquare or Facebook as a way to help encourage customer participation. This “low” or “no” cost promotion has a high impact on driving customer referrals through use of social media.

Ready to be part of TOTA’s Favorite Places page...?

First make sure you have done the following – a checklist for Favorite Places inclusion:

  1. Have/Create a Facebook Fan Page for your Business
  2. Create/Claim a Facebook "Place" for your Business – instructions attached
  3. Merge the Facebook Page and "Place" together
  4. Create/Claim a Foursquare Place for your Business – instructions attached

Once you have completed these 4 steps, Ellen Walker–Matthews and your business will be added to Favorite Places in the Thompson Okanagan.
