TOTA flew the Thompson Okanagan flag at this year's edition of the biggest annual Canadian event for U.S. travel media.
Market Experiences Specialist (South Region) Ellen Walker-Matthews had a full slate of appointments at the 2012 Canada Media Marketplace, held in April in San Francisco. She was part of the British Columbia contingent at the big show, along with B.C.'s five other regional destination management and marketing organizations and a number of large city DMOs and stakeholder representatives.
The Marketplace is organized by the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) and is held on the U.S. east coast and west coast alternately each year. CTC reports that at this year's 25th annual edition, 177 American media representatives met with 229 Canadian destination, DMO, regional and provincial tourism representatives – holding a total of more than 2,700 pre-set meetings.
CTC says the short speed-dating-style appointments "generated reams of story ideas to tempt Americans to pay a visit north of the 49th parallel." Gloria Loree, CTC's Executive Director of Global Communications adds, "Canada Media Marketplace retains its rich value in generating fresh story ideas around Canadian travel experiences."
A major theme at this year's Canada Media Marketplace was culinary journalism, and winners were announced for the first CTC Culinary Journalism Awards. The Marketplace also featured professional development for the travel journalists.
Walker-Matthews met with print, online, video and television travel journalists at the San Francisco show, providing the latest information on travel experiences for visitors throughout the Thompson Okanagan.
"The journalists showed a real interest in all facets of tourism in our region, and there was a particular interest in the culinary area," Walker-Matthews says. She notes that she also met with NBC television network representatives about possible coverage opportunities in the future. CBS 'Eye on the Bay' – a San Francisco-based lifestyle television program – filmed in the region, for a program which aired in May.
Walker-Matthews and TOTA Market Experiences Specialist (North Region) Howard Grieve both attended another big CTC travel media show – 'GoMedia Canada Marketplace' – held May 27-31 in Whitehorse, Yukon – where they promoted Thompson Okanagan destinations to a number of international and Canadian travel media.
