become a

biosphere committed entity

Biosphere is a Sustainable Tourism System certified by the Responsible Tourism Institute, an international certification body that maintains an Memorandum of Understanding with UNESCO, is affiliated to the World Tourism Organization, and is a member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. The system is aligned with the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris COP21 Accord to Fight Climate Change.

The Biosphere Adhesion Program allows tourism industry stakeholders within the Thompson Okanagan to be recognized and involved through the Biosphere Certification. The Adhesion Program follows a simple process in order to be recognized as a Biosphere Committed Entity.

Through the following process you will work with the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association who will provide step by step guidance for a smooth adherence into the Program.

Biosphere Committed Entity

steps to adhesion

  1. Stakeholder Commitment
Sign the commitment and make the first annual payment. Contract and invoice will be sent by email.

  2. Online Questionnaire
You will receive a link to an online Questionnaire that will require you to submit information pertaining to sustainable business practices (examples provided)

  3. Activate the Regional Pledge
As one of the requirements to meeting the Biosphere Adhesion criteria, we ask that you verbally commit to showcasing a regional pledge. The pledge will enable both industry and consumers to signify and share their commitment to responsible tourism. The Pledge is currently in development.

  4. Education and Training
An important aspect of Biosphere Adhesion criteria is training and education. As such you will be asked to provide evidence of professional development for sustainability practices within your organization. We also provide annual workshops and training opportunities at no extra charge.

As a Committed Biosphere Company you will be required to meet key sustainable tourism practices as outlined by the United Nations World Tourism Organization. Each year the Biosphere Interdepartmental committee will re-evaluate and determine goal areas that as an industry we would like to meet. Year one of the program has outlined the following goals:

  • Goal Area 5, Gender Equality: The entity must verify that non-discriminatory language is used within the organization, including hiring procedures and marketing materials.

  • Goal Area 7, Clean Energy: The entity must verify the responsible use of energy and provide evidence supporting the implementation of measures to improve energy efficiency. Examples may include: use of LED lighting, energy saving internal policy, educational material to raise awareness of energy saving.

  • Goal Area 12, Responsible Consumption and Production: The entity applies measures to minimize waste products and disposables where possible. Examples include: recycling and re-use policy, use of composting, proper waste disposal, education materials promoting responsible disposal.
